Hormonal changes and skincare in your 40s: managing skin changes due to hormones

Before I start, I need to precise that I am 49 and I have never had a better skin, like I do now! Big part of this blog would be simply sharing my personal experience, as after I turned 45 the whole game changed….in a unpleasant way. First thing I did was, changing my habits and lifestyle and treating my mind and body appropriate to my age.  Being aware and understanding that your body changes is crucial.  Your 40s are a pivotal decade of change, especially when it comes to your skin. As you transition through this phase of life, hormonal fluctuations can have a profound effect on the skin’s appearance and health. While it can feel like a sudden shift, understanding how your skin changes and adapting your skincare routine can help you manage these transitions and keep your skin looking radiant and healthy.

     I. Understanding the hormonal shift

Hormonal changes in your 40s are primarily driven by the decline in estrogen levels as your body approaches menopause. Estrogen plays a key role in maintaining the skin’s elasticity, thickness, and hydration. As these levels dip, the effects become visible. In addition to estrogen, progesterone levels also fluctuate, which can lead to increased skin sensitivity, irritation, and even breakouts. Testosterone, though less dominant, can also affect skin during this time. A relative increase in testosterone (due to the decrease in estrogen) can lead to adult acne, especially around the chin and jawline. Understanding the interplay of these hormones is essential in knowing how to treat and nourish your skin as it changes.

II. Common skin changes in your 40s

  1. Dryness and dehydration

With less estrogen comes a reduction in the production of sebum (your skin’s natural oil). This lack of moisture can result in dryness and rougher skin texture. Dehydrated skin not only feels uncomfortable but also makes fine lines and wrinkles more pronounced.

  1. Thinning and loss of elasticity

Collagen and elastin, the building blocks of youthful skin, begin to decline more rapidly in your 40s. This leads to thinning skin, which may sag or appear less firm, especially around the eyes, mouth, and neck.

  1. Hyperpigmentation and dark spots

Hormonal imbalances can cause melanocytes (the cells that produce pigment) to go into overdrive. This results in increased hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and melasma—especially if your skin is regularly exposed to the sun without protection.

  1. Acne and breakouts

Fluctuating hormones can also result in unexpected breakouts, particularly around the jawline, chin, and neck. These hormonal breakouts can feel frustrating, especially when combined with other skin concerns like dryness or sensitivity.

III. Skincare tips for hormonal changes

As your skin changes, so should your skincare routine. Prioritizing hydration, collagen support, and sun protection is key, along with products tailored to your specific skin concerns.

  1. Moisturize with hydrating ingredients

Since your skin may become drier during this phase, hydration is critical. Look for moisturizers that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, locking in moisture without feeling heavy. Glycerin and ceramides are also beneficial for repairing the skin’s moisture barrier. For deeper hydration, consider facial oils rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Oils like grapeseed, olive, and watermelon seed oils are not only moisturizing but also rich in antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental stressors.

  1. Incorporate collagen-boosting ingredients

To counteract thinning skin and loss of elasticity, products that boost collagen production are essential. Retinoids, vitamin C, and peptides are powerful anti-aging ingredients that can help stimulate collagen synthesis. I am very cautious when it comes to retinol and all the derivatives of it. Because of a bad experience, I do not use retinol in any form. It disrupted my skin barrier, and it did more harm than good. I think there are plenty other actives like Vitamin C, Resveratrol or peptides, which help slowing ageing. We can only slow ageing, not prevent it. Let’s be clear. Niacinamide is another must-have. It not only helps improve the skin’s texture and elasticity but also has soothing properties that can help with inflammation, especially if your skin becomes more sensitive. Our bestseller the Face Shield Serum is the go-to product – contains Resveratrol, Vitamin F and Niacinamide + hyaluronic acid and three botanicals from the Mediterranean.

  1. Be gentle with cleansers

Since your skin may become more sensitive as a result of hormonal changes, harsh cleansers should be avoided. Go for gentle, sulphate-free formulas that cleanse without stripping your skin’s natural oils. A cream-based or oil-based cleanser can remove impurities without disrupting the skin barrier. Consider double cleansing at night—starting with an oil cleanser to remove makeup and SPF, followed by a gentle foaming or cream cleanser to purify your skin. Here I can recommend our Micellar Balancing Cleanser – mild and effective removes dirt, sebum in excess and heavy make up without disrupting the skin barrier.

  1. Don’t forget SPF!

Sun protection becomes even more crucial as your skin becomes more vulnerable to damage. As estrogen levels decline, your skin’s ability to repair itself slows down, making it more susceptible to photoaging, sunspots, and hyperpigmentation. Make SPF a non-negotiable part of your daily routine, even on cloudy days. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher will protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. If you’re looking for additional protection, consider using an antioxidant serum underneath your SPF. Ingredients like vitamin C or ferulic acid can boost your sunscreen’s effectiveness and neutralize free radicals.

  1. Lifestyle tips to support your skin (the crucial point on my opinion!)

While skincare products can help address external concerns, taking care of your skin from the inside is just as important. A holistic approach that includes diet, hydration, and overall wellness will keep your skin looking its best.

  1. Follow a balanced diet. A nutrient-rich diet can significantly impact the appearance and health of your skin. A Mediterranean diet, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, is excellent for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin. Foods like salmon, nuts, olive oil, and fresh fruits and vegetables help reduce inflammation and promote skin repair.
  2. Get enough sleep. During sleep, your body repairs and regenerates cells, including those in your skin. Not getting enough rest can lead to dullness, puffiness, and more pronounced lines. Try to get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support your skin’s natural healing process.
  3. Manage stress. Hormonal fluctuations are often worsened by stress, which can lead to breakouts, inflammation, and premature aging. Incorporating stress-reduction techniques like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can help keep your hormones—and your skin—in balance.
  4. Stay hydrated. Hydration starts from within. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin cells plump and supports the natural repair processes that keep your skin looking youthful. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, and consider incorporating hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon, and leafy greens.

Hormonal changes in your 40s can bring a variety of skin concerns, from dryness and sagging to breakouts and dark spots. By adjusting your skincare routine to include hydrating, collagen-boosting, and protective products, you can manage these changes effectively. Don’t forget that skincare is just one part of the equation—lifestyle factors like diet, hydration, sleep, and stress management also play a vital role in supporting your skin’s health during this time of transition.

Embrace your 40s with confidence, knowing that with the right care, your skin can continue to glow through every stage of life. And remember: your best age is now!
